Art on Track, brought to you by SALVO, is an exciting and innovative event that will showcase Chicago artists and the arts in downtown Chicago. Art on Track is an installation of local artists’ works on a reserved eight-car CTA train, which will circle the loop on the evening of August 30th, 2008. Art on Track will provide local artists with a means to exhibit their work during this unique event in a very public and unconventional way. The classic gallery system can not fulfill all of the needs of artists and often does not reach the much of the public. This show is intended to locate and help unite local artists in joining our efforts to connect Chicago artists with one another, thus more freely expressing our ideas. In turn, Art on Track will endeavor to make the mode of presenting art more accessible and more a part of everyday life in Chicago. [tiltviewer id="flickr" width="530" height="700" flickrtags="artontrackfip08302008"] by: Alex Magana The train was chosen as an ideal means of presenting art in Chicago for a number of reasons. For one thing, the train system is widely used in Chicago and interacts with a number of distinct neighborhoods in Chicago; a city known for its diversity. Art on Track will provide a means of exposure to the world of art for Chicago that is usually confined to limited areas in the city. SALVO chose the train as a means to point out the desperate need to more readily connect pockets of artists and the community in a stronger web to make more fluid the exchanging of ideas, concepts and culture. Chicago is often thought of as secondary in art to cities like New York. By breaking down some of the barriers to access to art and encouraging more public and unique ways of experiencing art in Chicago, SALVO hopes to foster a new forum for the exchange of ideas between the artist and the public. The more public these conversations are, the stronger and more diverse the exchange of ideas will be. In this way we hope to tap the true potential of art as a part of everyday life in the city.
